트로피이미지

Introduction
Learning a language is a hard task. Some say that kids should learn a second language at an early age. Others think that kids should wait until they are older to study a new language. Today our debaters will discuss whether all kids should learn a second language at an early age.

Constructive
Debater 1 Henry

All kids should learn a second language at an early age. Research shows that a child’s brain goes through an important stage early on when it is more open to learning information. Secondly, an adult has spent more time speaking their native language. Therefore, their brain is already fixed to use their first language. However, a child’s brain is more flexible. That’s why it is easy for them to accept new grammar rules.

Debater 2 Ashley
All kids should not learn a second language at an early age. It is a myth that young children are better than adults or adolescents at learning second languages. Children are only better at learning pronunciation. However, kids can learn grammar rules and vocabulary better when they are older. It is actually harder for children because they have not learned different ways to memorize new words or grammar rules.

Rebuttal
Debater 1 Henry

Kids should learn a second language at an early age so that they can have good pronunciation. Scientific studies show that kids who learn a language early have a better accent. Also, young children who learn a second language early think that learning a new language is normal and natural. On the other hand, adolescents and adults often are embarrassed to make a mistake. They are also shyer to speak the new language.

Debater 2 Ashley
You said that there is a time when kids are more open to learning different types of information. During this time, I think kids should focus on learning their native language. It is good to learn a new language. However, it is most important for kids to speak their native language well. An adult should already speak their language fluently. Therefore, they are ready to learn a new language.

Judge’s Comments
The winner of today’s debate is Henry. Ashley said that it is a myth that young children are better than adults or adolescents at learning second languages. However, she did not provide enough evidence in her argument to support her claim. It is important to support your claims with evidence.
